HATCHING TECHNIQUE
Hatching/cross hatching technique along with other graphic means of creating tonal gradations in a drawing derives from etching and engraving. ( See Etching and Engraving) The utilization of this process as a means of reproducing drawings on paper dates back to the Renaissance (15th century)- see Old Master PrintsHere are some examples. Please practice this technique in your sketchbooks, drawing from direct observation. Choose simple objects at first, lit by a single light source - either window light or one reading lamp (turn off all other lights).
